The Demonstration that happened in Tuesday, 24th September 2019, where a lot of people, especially students from many universities, came to the DPR and MPR Building to demonstrate about the new rules. The students that came on this day, came from different universities, not just the ones that are in Jakarta, but also students from universities all around Indonesia, because this demonstration did not just happened in Jakarta, but in different areas in Indonesia also. These students came from different backgrounds, ethnicity, social status, and so on, but their goals are the same, to defend the Indonesian reformation, the KPK, and to give critics to the government regarding their decision to validate the new rules. So, if we look at it in this perspective, the demonstration actually unites people’s diversity. During the demonstration, no one questions who you are and your backgrounds, because the only important thing is that the message that they want to send to the government is heard. Other than that, the students, during the demonstration, always looked out for each other, even the ones who are from different universities and people that accidently get stuck in the middle of the demonstration. The Demonstration didn’t only show the solidarity in the field or in place where it’s executed like where it was mentioned in previous paragraph, but also in another platform like virtual platform such as Instagram, Twitter, Whatsapp, etc. From here and there the issue “Demonstration” is talked about all over the platforms. How many posters were posted to encourage us the youth to move and be critical to our failed law rules and our apathetic government. It is very heartwarming to see everyone putting a lot of sympathy on the youth movement, how even those who weren’t even participating directly to the field also gives attention to the movement. A simple sharing post to posts might look normal but actually it shows how at least one events affect so much to everyone.

Not only in sharing posters, but also communicating on latest news to share to each other. How it spreads awareness on the danger in the event, people remind each other to be very careful and aware of the situation and condition in the demonstration. (Annisa)

The demonstration occur simultaneously in Indonesia and show solidarity both in the real world and social media. But, let’s we look deeper, does it really unites all of us? On the other side, some people saw the demonstration as destructives movement. At the beginning, The demonstration starts peacefully but later on few people provoke others and it ends with chaos. Based on IDN Times, The damage are three police stations and toll gates were burned, vandalism on wall in Senayan/DPR building, student’s motorcycle were left in the demonstration location, the student also damaging plants in front of DPR building to make it as a tool to fight the police. Second, the demonstration happened to be an opportunity to the opposed side that want to provoke the society to think negatively about current president, before the inauguration for elected president, by using the paid mass to provoke during the demonstration that were supposed to be a movement to uphold justice and not take advantage of to thwart upcoming inauguration of the elected president. Although in the bright side the demonstration unites Indonesian citizen and increase its solidarity, as written in the last paragraph, it could also cause chaos. According to the media, there are a lot of victims from the demonstration that occurred on Tuesday, 24thSeptember 2019. The citizens who disagree and protested about the new regulations that are made by the DPR went wild outside the DPR building, some even insist to go inside the building and try to break through the fences of the DPR building. This situation causes the security forces to shoot tear gas. When the tear gas is launched, it causes the person that inhale the tear gas have problems with their breathing, and it also cause sore eyes. Due to the massive mass that attend the demonstration on Tuesday, the situations are not conducive at all, there are also provocateurs on every corner. This chaotic situation ended up leaving some Indonesian students loses their life, this is a very heartbreaking incident. People from all around Indonesia respect their struggle and will remember them as a nation’s hero, with very deep condolences. (Yollanda)
